Faculty Research Spotlight: Charting New Paths for “Blue Growth”

Published on

Levin College is excited to share a new publication co-authored by Drs. Michael Skladany, lecturer, Department of Criminology and Sociology and Roland Anglin, Professor, Urban Studies in collaboration with international colleagues in Maritime Studies: “Articulating Alternatives to the Anti-Politics of Blue Growth.”

This article takes a fresh look at the global concept of blue growth, strategies for economic development tied to oceans and waterways, and explores new ways to think about sustainability and stewardship. The authors analyze the assumptions behind blue growth and introduce emerging ideas like blue justice, oceanhood, and rights of nature.

These frameworks encourage a more holistic approach to managing water resources and protecting ecosystems. While the paper addresses global issues, its insights are highly relevant to Lake Erie and Northeast Ohio watersheds, where balancing economic activity with environmental health is a priority. This work reflects Levin College’s commitment to research that informs practical solutions for communities and natural resources. Read the full article in Maritime Studies here.
