Meet Dr. Steven Sanders, Urban Education Graduate (2022)

Dr. Steven SandersDr. Steven Sanders is a recent graduate of the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education’s doctoral Urban Education program. In his new role as an Assistant Professor of Psychology in Oregon State’s School of Psychological Science, Dr. Sanders manages the Adjustment, Identity, and Racism Lab, works in the University Counseling Center, and mentors and advises graduate students. Dr. Sanders said the experiences and academic accolades he achieved while at CSU prepared him for such a prestigious role: “The Urban Education Program helped develop the skills I needed to excel in this position. I was uniquely prepared by my time at CSU. My program allowed me to mentor other students, teach, and conduct high quality research. Without CSU, I doubt I would be the researcher and faculty member I am now.”

Dr. Sanders also shared that he was able to advance his skills as a scholar during his time at CSU. He published an article in an international journal of psychology and made several academic presentations, making powerful contributions to the field while also juggling the many demands of his graduate program. Dr. Sanders also maintained an internship at the US Department of Veteran Affairs during part of his academic tenure at Levin. Dr. Sanders said he particularly valued the lessons he learned in supporting the success of his students. “I learned how to put students’ needs and development before my own, and I learned to defend my students,” he shared.

Dr. Sanders is passionate about effective and positive representation in the sciences and aspires to serve as an inspiration for up-and-coming scholars. Levin College is proud to be a part of Dr. Sander's story of success.
