The mission of the Center is to promote academic success, wellness, and equity in K-12 urban education in Greater Cleveland and beyond through research, evaluation, and technical assistance. The Center operates on a partnership model, building long-term, mutualistic engagements with education agencies, schools, teachers, and students to collaboratively solve problems. News
Center for Urban Education director Adam Voight contributed an article to a series published by Crain's Cleveland Business on solutions to resolve equity issues in Ohio schools. He argues for schools to create more opportunities for student voice, for example through a strategy called youth participatory action research (YPAR). The Center is a proud partner in two major student voice and leadership initiatives in Ohio that employ YPAR: the First Ring Student Leadership Institute in Northeast Ohio and the Student Leadership Research Collaborative in Central and Southern Ohio. The Center also helped launch Project HighKEY in collaboration with teachers and students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to explore way in which YPAR can be infused in high school classes. Resources for educators to use YPAR in their work can be found on the SchYPAR.org website, created by the Center.
