Workshop Overview

SBA and Burten, Bell, Carr Development, Inc., in conjunction with Cleveland State University, offers a Social Entrepreneurship Training Program, which aspires to foster social entrepreneurship for community based economically disadvantaged small and micro-businesses rooted in disinvested urban neighborhoods in Cleveland that mitigate or negate the structural obstacles to business building. Specifically, the goals of the training program are to:

  • Provide professional development for impact, peer accountability, and nascent social entrepreneur ecosystem development
  • Equip entrepreneurs with skill development, access to resources and relationships, and insights and the tools needed to turn ideas into action
  • Create opportunities for collaboration building a community of peer support for business leaders where participants develop and fine-tune their business ideas, critically examining every part and determining next steps through real-time feedback. 
  • Substantially increases the capacity of economically disadvantaged small and micro-businesses in NE Ohio.

Throughout the program, participants actively engage in real time activities designed to guide them through the five stages of entrepreneurship from ideation to exit.  The comprehensive curriculum is delivered in a Cohort Based: Twelve (12) customized workshops and capstone for start-up social enterprises.

Additional learning opportunities that cover individualized topics such as business structures, financial modeling, marketing and e-commerce are delivered in three methods:

Topic Based Virtual Sessions "Lunch and Learn": Toolkit and process-improvement strategies for ventures

  • Session Dates: January 27, 2023 from TBD via zoom then last Friday of each month (TBD)
  • Location / Venue: Virtual classes will be held via Zoom

Wayfinding Sessions: A Wayfinding Meeting is one in which you quickly assess where an entrepreneur is in their startup journey, point them in a direction, and make recommendations for next steps.

  • Session Dates: February 3, 2023 from TBD via zoom then first Friday of each month (TBD)
  • Location / Venue: Virtual classes will be held via Zoom

Coaching: 20–30 minute sessions where an entrepreneur can meet one-on-one with an advisor or subject matter expert to get important questions answered. For example, support in venture setup, strategic planning, and funding strategies.  

  • Session Dates: January 23, 2023 from TBD via zoom then every other Monday
  • Location / Venue: Virtual classes will be held via Zoom

Instructor Bios

MichaelMatthews.jpgMichael Matthews is the CEO of P5 Ventures, Inc., which specializes in business development, training, and project management.  In addition to his work with Cleveland State University, Michael is also a consultant and instructor with the Non Profit Center at the La Salle School of Business.  With over 25 years' experience, Michael provides support to individuals and entities building their capacity to improve neighborhood conditions, community-based organizations that desire to increase their effectiveness engaging community residents and initiatives focusing on equity, access and public health.  Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Michael received his Bachelors of Arts and Masters of Liberal Studies from the University of Miami, Florida, a Certificate in Non Profit Management from Case Western Reserve University, a Certificate in Executive Leadership and Community Coaching from Coachnet Global and a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University.

PhilipWenk.jpgPhilip Wenk earned his BSBA and MBA from Xavier University.  He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology specializing in trauma.  He is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Behavioral Management. Philip has created several programs to provide much needed interventions for underserved or not served populations.  One of his programs, called the Power of Harmony, provides music therapy and mentorship to incarcerated young men, is being taken nationally. He started his first foundation right out of college.  He provided after school programs for children in the project areas.  President George H. W. Bush awarded Philip with the National Point of Light for his effort to help empower children. In a prior position as a Senior Technical Consultant for the Department of Housing & Urban Development, he was awarded a Presidential Citation by President William Clinton. To date, he has helped raise over $200 million in funds and services for the nonprofit sector.  Recently, he accepted the position as the first Social-Innovator-in-Residence at John Carroll University. His most treasured experience is being the father to 3 amazing sons and one guardian angel.

Cleveland State University reserves the right to cancel a workshop and refund the workshop fee in the event that there are an insufficient number of registrants.
