About the Department of Criminology and Sociology
The Department of Criminology and Sociology at Cleveland State University (CSU) has a dynamic history rooted in the university's commitment to understanding complex social issues and promoting community well-being. Established in the early years of the university's development, the department has evolved significantly to meet the changing needs of society and the demands of the criminal justice field.
Initially, sociology courses were offered as part of the broader curriculum when CSU was founded in 1964. By the late 1960s, as societal issues such as crime and social inequality gained prominence, the need for a more focused academic approach became apparent. In response, the Department of Sociology was formally established in 1972, dedicated to examining the social structures, processes, and inequalities that shape human behavior and societal outcomes.
As the field of criminology emerged as a distinct area of study within the social sciences, CSU recognized the importance of integrating criminological perspectives into its academic offerings. In 2006, the Criminology major was developed, reflecting this expanded focus. By 2009 the department changed its name to The Department of Sociology and Criminology. The new name signaled a commitment to not only understanding sociological concepts but also addressing issues related to crime, justice, and the criminal justice system.
In the early 2000s, the department expanded its research initiatives and faculty expertise in various areas of criminology and sociology. Faculty members engaged in impactful research addressing critical social issues such as crime, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, and social policy. Their work has contributed to scholarly literature and informed local, state, and national discussions on crime and justice. Faculty and students actively engage in discussions and initiatives aimed at creating a more just and equitable society.
A significant milestone in the department's evolution came in 2008 with the establishment of the Criminology Research Center. The center is an applied, community-based, and interdisciplinary hub that provides research support to agencies working within or adjacent to the criminal justice and social services systems. It offers various services, including program evaluation and evaluative research, survey development and administration, qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis, technical assistance and training, and dissemination of research. The center’s faculty, staff, and students possess diverse experiences and expertise in translating research into practice, focusing on areas such as gender-based violence, criminal justice, policing, prosecution, gun violence, forensic intelligence, and program evaluation. Faculty members are nationally recognized scholars who share their findings through scholarly publications, project reports, and presentations to academic, practitioner, and community audiences.
Additionally, the Department of Criminology and Sociology at CSU has fostered partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and social service providers. These collaborations have enhanced students' learning experiences and allowed for practical applications of their studies in addressing crime and social issues in the Cleveland community.
As part of the university's reorganization in 2022, the Department of Criminology and Sociology became part of the newly formed Levin College of Public Affairs and Education. This transition allowed for enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating criminological and sociological perspectives with fields such as urban studies, public policy, and education.
Today, the Department of Criminology and Sociology continues to be a leader in shaping the next generation of scholars, practitioners, and advocates for social and criminal justice. Its history reflects a commitment to addressing pressing social issues through education, research, and community engagement, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to contribute to society.
