Train to Make a Lasting Impact on Mental Health
Are you passionate about helping others improve their mental health and well-being? The Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) master’s program at Cleveland State University offers a rigorous, clinically focused path to becoming a licensed professional counselor in Ohio. With expert faculty and practical training, you'll be prepared to serve clients in a wide range of professional settings—such community agencies, hospitals, and private practices.
Our CACREP-accredited, 60-credit-hour program is designed to build strong clinical skills and help you meet all academic requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor (PC) in the State of Ohio. Classes are offerred in-person, with some classes available online as well. You’ll graduate with the knowledge, competencies, and confidence to work in diverse clinical environments.
Program Objectives
We are committed to educating counselors who are clinically skilled, ethically grounded, and dedicated to service. The objectives of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program include:
Education
- To educate Clinical Mental Health Counseling students who meet all Ohio standards for licensure as Professional Counselors (PC) and Professional Clinical Counselors (PCC).
- To provide training across the 8 CACREP common core areas:
- Professional Counseling Orientation and Ethical Practice
- Social and Cultural Diversity
- Human Growth & Development
- Career Development
- Counseling and Helping Relationship
- Group Counseling and Group Work
- Assessment and Testing
- Research and Program Evaluation
Advancement of Program Excellence
- Promote professional counselor identity with students through involvement in professional counseling organizations.
- Faculty actively contribute to the field of Counselor Education nationally through publications, presentations, and service.
- Maintain CACREP accreditation for Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Service
- Provide service to counseling interns and the CSU community through the Counseling and Academic Success Clinic (CASC).
- Engage the Greater Cleveland area through continuing education workshops, pro bono presentations, and consultation.
- Provide ongoing service to the counseling profession.
