Internship Placement: City of Mentor’s Fire Department

Hanna Sauberan interned at the City of Mentor’s Fire Department over the summer.

Here’s what she had to say about her experience:

What did you do at your internship?
For most of the days, I shadowed the firefighters and paramedics at the fire department. I would go with them on calls, observe the treatment of the patients, and assist with any of the small tasks. On other days, I would shadow the dispatchers’ office, Battalion Chief, or the fire inspectors. I even got to spend one day with the Lake County EMA.

What was your favorite project? Why?
During my internship, I was able to create a project that focused on the amount of time that the squads were unavailable due to traveling back and forth from the hospitals. The main goal was to compare the time of unavailability between the current hospitals and the future hospital that is being built in the city of Mentor. Since there is no emergency department within Mentor, every squad is forced to travel outside the city limits, thus losing time for other duties and responsibilities. This project was very interesting because I got to see how each fire station differed in their number of calls and how much time they were unavailable for.

What skills did you learn, sharpen, or improve?
Communication, Observational, and Critical Thinking Skills

What advice do you have for current interns or students who are searching for an internship?
My advice is to ask as many questions as you can. This will provide more insight on your career aspirations and can teach you things that you may never learn from your coursework.

What are your career aspirations and/or next steps?
My goal is to become a paramedic after graduation.
