Meet CPL America Reads Tutor,  Mustafa Isse

Mustafa Isse

"At one of my work sites, there a couple of students that come in and don't ask for help, so I have learned that it's all about jumping in and seeing where they are at and meeting them there".

Mustafa is a Freshman studying Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. Mustafa was hired to tutor at both Re:Source Cleveland (formerly known as Refugee Response) and Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School.

Mustafa is a Student Ambassador for CSU's Jack, Joseph, & Morton Mandel Honors College

What made you want to work for the OCE as a Viking Corps Tutor?

I wanted to give back to the community I grew up in, specifically Re:Source Cleveland and all the areas they operate. Re:Source Cleveland was very active in the process of me and my family's acquaintance to the country from the language to the culture here.

What has tutoring at your site taught you about the community you serve?

My tutoring sites have taught me that community is diverse, and it could come in so many ways both unexpected and charming. It has taught me to appreciate the beauty of patience.

What role do you feel you play when you tutor students?

I feel as though I play the role of a role model, at least that is the role I would like to grow into. I think it is very important because students getting to see other students who were in their very shoes can be uplifting if not motivating.

What do you feel you are gaining from being a Viking Corps tutor?

One of the best things is being able to meet others and learning how to engage in conversation with someone else which is a very important life skill that I think isn't pushed as hard as it should be. I'm also getting to practice concepts I have already learned by being able to reteach it to someone else.
