Meet Jackie Bomgardner OCE Davis Aerospace & Maritime High School & CPL America Reads Tutor

Jackie was hired by the OCE as a Viking Corps tutor for the Fall 2022 semester. Jackie is majoring in English Education with a minor in Creative Writing.

What made you want to work as a Viking Corps Tutor?

I really love teaching and helping people. With having the ability to tutor others, I can help students improve their studies. I thought it was a great opportunity.

Do you have any other tutoring or community service experience?

My high school encouraged a lot of community service, and I would usually go over the “required” amount of time. I mainly worked at food pantries, like the pantry at Parma Lutheran Church, and other food-drive related activities.

Why did you choose to attend CSU?

CSU was my first choice because Cleveland has always been my home and most of my teachers that I have looked up to have gotten their teaching degrees at CSU, inspiring me to pursue mine in the same place.

Are you involved in any clubs or organizations at CSU?

I am involved in the Dungeons and Dragons Club.

What had tutoring meant to you and to the students and staff you are serving at Davis A & M?

I feel amazing when I see a student’s face light up with the correct answer. Being a help to these kids is one of the greatest parts of the job. The teachers also enjoy the aid we provide to them in and outside of class.

Any thoughts on why students should get involved with programs, like Viking Corps, while they are students?

I think these jobs are a great experience for community outreach. The ability to connect with a community is a huge part of Cleveland, so this job is great!
