English Education

Program

CSU's English Education program is an Adolescent Young Adult Education (grades 7-12) licensure program that works in coordination with undergraduate and post-baccalaureate degree programs in English in the College of Liberal Arts and graduate students who are specializing in English Language Arts in the Masters of Urban Secondary Teaching (MUST) program. Undergraduate students will earn a degree in English and AYA English Language Arts (ELA) licensure and post-bacs will earn AYA ELA licensure.

Program Overview

The AYA English Education program is intended to prepare candidates to teach adolescents from ages 12 through 21. The program offers a range of courses that focus on the needs of adolescents and young adults as they relate to the design, delivery, and evaluation of culturally responsive teaching and learning and discipline-specific preparation in the field of Integrated English Language Arts.  Throughout the course of the program, students will develop and refine their professional knowledge and skills as they engage in reflective practice and inquiry. To support students' reflective practice and inquiry, candidates will engage in extensive, ongoing observations and field work, including a semester-long supervised student teaching experience.

Admission

Prospective English Education students are required to meet certain standards and requirements in the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education and to declare a minor in education. For further information please refer to the Undergraduate Catalog.

Field Experiences

English Education students participate in a collection of different field experiences as part of the program. Field experiences are coordinated through CSU's Office of Field Services and include an observation-based experience, a practicum experience, and, during the candidates' final semester, a complete student teaching experience. During the field experiences, candidates are advised by CSU supervisors as well as mentor teachers who work full time in local-area schools.
