teletherapy

Introduction by Keynote Speaker Laura C. Hoffman, S.J.D., LL.M., J.D.

Legal Presenter: Bradley Reed, JD

Mental Health Presenter: Stacy Simera, MSSA, LISW-S

An article published in the American Journal of Medical Quality by Maese et al. (2020) noted that “The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed telehealth to the forefront in a way that 30 years of physician advocacy could not. The pandemic forced the alignment of the policy, technology, and economics of telemedicine.” These changes also created a revolution in the delivery of behavioral health services with the rapid growth of providers offering virtual therapy to millions of Americans. The expedited changes left many legal professionals, law makers, and mental health professionals playing catch-up to understand the shifting landscape of the legal and ethical considerations surrounding virtual therapy.  This course will explore these considerations and discuss populations who may be disadvantaged by the rapid transition due to the digital divide.

Introduction by Keynote Speaker Habeebah Rasheed Grimes, Psy.S

Legal Presenter: Leah Winsberg, JD

Mental Health Presenter: Brian L. Bethel, Ph.D., LPCC-S, LCDC III, RPT-S

This continuing education program seeks to demystify the juvenile court competency determination process by educating mental health professionals about the juvenile competency evaluation process. Much like adults, competency determination is a complicated bureaucratic system. However, as often noted in pediatric medicine, it is a mistake to view children as small adults when developing treatment and rehabilitation policies. The course will review the evaluation process and examine the pipelines that result in the initial youth detention. In addition, innovative approaches to prevent the legal offense from occurring in the first place will be examined including innovative mental health services to treat children who have experienced trauma. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the topic.
