Teacher Licensure Admission Requirements
Undergraduate Admission Requirements
Teacher Licensure
Students pursuing an undergraduate major in P-5 Education, Middle Childhood Education, Special Education (Mild/Moderate & Moderate/Intensive), and must be admitted to the the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education. Undergraduate students seeking a teaching license in Adolescent/Young Adult or Music should seek admission to the College of Arts and Sciences. These students (exception for those in Music) must declare a license in education. The following admission requirements must be met to declare a major (or licensure ) in a teacher licensure program and be eligible to enroll in professional courses above the 200 level.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Completion of 30 semester hours of college-level course work
- A composite ACT* score of 20 or higher OR
- Demonstrate proficiency in writing by earning a grade of B- or higher in a college-level English course or an English and Reading ACT* sub- score of 18 (or higher)
- Demonstrate proficiency in mathematics by earning a grade of B- or higher in a college-level mathematics course or a mathematics ACT* sub-score of 18 (or higher)
- Complete an intake appointment with a coach in the Levin Student Services Center (Julka Hall 170; 216-687-4625)
*Examples of equivalent nationally normed assessment of mathematical, reading, and writing achievement: SAT Composite Score of 1020; SAT Math Section score of 510; SAT Evidence-based Reading and Writing score of 510; Praxis Core for Educators scores of Math: 150, Reading: 156, Writing: 162.
Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Admission Requirements
Students pursuing a post-baccalaureate licensure program in P-5 Education, Middle Childhood Education, Adolescent/Young Adult, or Music are required to meet the following admission standards:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Complete an intake appointment with an an advisor in the Levin Student Services Center (Julka Hall 170; 216-687-4625)
Graduate Admission Requirements
Students pursuing a graduate degree are required to meet the following standards for admission. Specific programs within the college (initial teacher licensure programs and Counseling ) with additional requirements are listed below.
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of a 2.75 OR
- Complete 12 semester hours of graduate credit in the program area as a non-degree student (including EDB or HPR 601 if degree-seeking) with a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or above and a grade of B- or better in EDB or HPR 601 OR
- Earn a score at the 50th percentile on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Teacher Licensure
The following admission requirements must be met to be granted program acceptance in an initial teacher licensure program (MUST, DREAM, Special Education, and P-5 Education).
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of a 3.0 OR
- Complete 12 semester hours of graduate credit in the program area as a non-degree student (including EDB 601 if degree-seeking) with a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or above and a grade of B- or better in EDB 601 OR
- Earn a score at the 50th percentile on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Counseling
Two letters of recommendation must be submitted in addition to official transcripts to be considered for admission into the Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling program.
The review process for Counseling applications occurs on the following dates:
- April 1 for the Fall semester
- October 1 for the Spring semester
- February 1 for the Summer semester
